One, two, three magic is a discipline program developed by Thomas  W. Phelan, Ph.D.  “1-2-3 Magic addresses the difficult task of child discipline with humor, keen insight and proven experience. This time-tested program provides easy-to-follow steps for disciplining children aged 2-12 without yelling, arguing or spanking.  You’ll also learn when-and how-your silence can speak louder than you think” Click here to learn more about Thomas W Phelan and his approach to discipline. The 1-2-3 Magic discipline program is used in the Marion Elementary kindergarten classroom.  A stoplight is displayed on the bulletin board; attached to the bottom of the stoplight are clothes pins containing each child’s name.  After classroom rules have been established and the program has been explained to the class, our 1-2-3 Magic begins!  If a student is not following our classroom rules, he/she will be told to move his/her clothes pin to the green on the stop light. If other rules are not followed, the child will continue to move up the stoplight.  When a clothes pin reaches red, the student will have a timeout or spend time in for recess.  If  behavior doesn’t change and the student is asked to move the clothes pin again, a note will be sent home to the child’s parents.  When the entire class needs to settle down, the teacher will begin to count 1-2-3… The class will take their seats and be quiet.  If a child does not move his/her clothes pin during the school day, a sticker will be added to his/her sticker chart.  All students will get a new start each day.
